Hemmings Sunday Cinema – Burt Munro, floating Austin, They Drive By Night

BurtMunro

By now, we've probably all seen "The World's Fastest Indian," the story of New Zealander Burt Munro's quest to set a land-speed record at Bonneville, but to get an idea of how closely that film hewed to reality, check out "Offerings to the God of Speed," a short documentary in which the tale is told in Munro's own words.

* Who exactly this Mr. Barre that intended to drive an Austin 7 across the Irish Sea was, we haven't been able to determine, but based on the last clip in this British Pathe video, it looks like he was at least doing it quickly.

* Finally, we initially thought we'd include the opening of "Cannonball Run 2" in this slot this week, but it's pretty much a straight rehash of the original, so let's watch some trucker noir with the 1940 Bogart flick "They Drive By Night." (via)
