In 2013, the International Hot Rod Association tapped Cordova (Illinois) International Raceway owner Scott Gardner to take the helm of its operations. Last week, Gardner abruptly left the organization, which swiftly named a new president and suggested that major changes to its “platform,” or business plan, will be announced before the end of this year.
The latest IHRA president, at least on an interim basis, is Skooter Peaco, although a statement from the IHRA announcing the personnel changes said a national search for a permanent president was already underway. No reason was given for Gardner’s departure. IHRA Entertainment, as it’s called, is a holding of IRG Sports + Entertainment of Jupiter, Florida, which also operates Palm Beach International Raceway, Maryland International Raceway and most recently, Cordova, which it purchased from Gardner before he became IHRA president.
The Internet has been buzzing with speculation about the intrigues that may be associated with these changes, but nothing official has been announced – although interestingly, the IHRA did confirm that its 2016 schedule will be shortened by two national events. One is in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the other is at Cordova. Meanwhile, the operators of Dragway 42 in Ohio reported in a Facebook post that IHRA’s main office will be moving from Summit Raceway Park in Norwalk, Ohio, to IRG’s home base in Florida, although that hasn’t been confirmed by the company.
