The Race of Gentlemen adds Wall of Death show to the weekend festivities

Mel Stultz, founder of The Race of Gentlemen, has recently completed construction on a new/old Wall of Death attraction, which will be on display at the June 4-5 beach racing blowout in Wildwood, New Jersey. It seems appropriate that Mel would cook up an idea like this in 2016, 100 years after the debut of the first traveling Wall of Death.

This particular Wall of Death is the oldest operating unit still in existence and was built in 1938. It has toured at various motorcycling events over the last 20 years with Rhett Rotten, who has now partnered with Mel to return the track to its former glory.

The reassembly has been an arduous process, with new wooden planks replacing the tired old surface, but the rest of the 80-year old structure is intact. If you have witnessed Rhett Rotten in action at an event before, the exterior appearance of the Wall and all of its circus-like banners will be very familiar to you.

Rhett Rotten is also going to be one of the riders you will see performing stunts on the Wall of Death at The Race of Gentlemen this weekend, navigating the 30-foot-high boards astride his 1927 Indian Scout. You can view a YouTube video of the reconstruction process below:

This attraction adds even further interest to the weekend’s festivities, which include a “Customs by the Sea” car show for pre-1952 cars and customs (preregistration is required for exhibitors), Friday’s free “Night of the Troglodytes” pre-party and Sixties and Seventies chopper motorcycle exhibition, a bonfire and live music on the beach Saturday night, and two full days of beach racing for prewar hot rods and tank-shift motorcycles.

CUSTOMS BY THE SEA:

Customs by the Sea is a traditional custom car show hosted by Kustomrama, the Traditional Rod & Kustom Encyclopedia. Presented in cooperation with the Oilers Car Club, during The Race of Gentlemen, the Customs by the Sea is a celebration of the early custom car. The show is held at the beach in Wildwood, New Jersey, next to the Race of Gentlemen.

The rules are simple. Customs by the Sea is open for pre-1952 custom cars, restyled in a pre-1952 style. No visible parts newer than 1952. We have a limited number of spaces available so you have to pre-register if you want to be a part of the gathering. EVENT TICKET INFO:

Weekend pass includes access to the races on Saturday and Sunday, plus free entry to our Saturday night party. Weekend passes will also be available at the door; Adults $55, Children 7 and over $25. (Best price is available on line). Single day tickets are available at the door only; Adults $30, Children 7 and over $15. Children under 6 are free.
