Looking through manufacturers’ replacement parts catalogs, one can’t help wondering about the possibility of piecing together an entire car piece by piece. Studebaker-Packard designer Bob Doehler did just that, though not with any old car, and not in the Johnny Cash style. Rather, he got authorization from Mercedes-Benz to buy 300 SL gullwing parts one at a time to satisfy his perfectionism. He never put the car together, but according to BenzWorld.org and TheAvanti.net, the gullwing was eventually assembled. (via)

* Stance is Everything’s Theme Tuesdays pulls some interesting stuff out of the woodwork, including the Mr. Cartoon ice cream truck lowrider, part of the blog’s recent ice cream and delivery truck theme post.
* The Novi V-8, perhaps the Indy engine most steeped in lore, could probably fill an entire book. Mac’s Motor City Garage, however, condensed the story of the engine to a somewhat shorter blog post this past week.
* Finally, last weekend at Pebble Beach, FIVA handed out a pair of preservation awards: one to a 1902 Thomas Model 17, the other to a 1969 Lamborghini Miura P 400 S.
