In 2014, online hot rod and custom encyclopedia Kustomrama debuted Customs by the Sea, a "traditional" custom car show limited to restyled pre-1952 automobiles, held in conjunction with The Race of Gentlemen in Wildwood, New Jersey. The show was an instant success, and would certainly have grown in participation and attendance had Hurricane Joaquin not postponed last year's festivities. Now that The Race of Gentlemen is adding a West Coast event for 2016, it makes sense that Customs by the Sea will add a West Coast show as well.
The pre-1952 cutoff for participants was not chosen at random. In November 1952, brothers George and Sam Barris debuted a car at the Petersen Motorama that would influence automotive design for decades to come. Now known as the Hirohata Merc for its first owner, Bob Hirohata, the radically restyled custom is used to define the starting point for the modern custom era.
Though Customs by the Sea is limited to pre-1952 cars, restyled in a pre-1952 fashion, any year custom is welcome to attend and display in an adjacent parking area. The new show will carry the same rules and regulations, and Kustomrama describes the Pismo Beach location as the "perfect placement" for gathering both Nor-Cal and So-Cal customs.
The Wildwood, New Jersey, show will be held on June 4-5, while the Pismo Beach, California, Customs by the Sea will take place on October 15-16. For additional information, or to submit a car for consideration, visit CustomsByTheSea.com.
