'Tis the season. That is, 'tis the season for awful B-grade (at best) horror flicks hazily recalled from staying up way too late watching basic cable. And if you think we're talking "Christine" or "Maximum Overdrive" or that James Brolin flick "The Car," you haven't been watching Hemmings Sunday Cinema for long. No, we're digging deep for this week's lineup, and we've found four of the cheesiest automotive-themed made-for-TV schlock films made. Now all we need is the Cryptkeeper cackling some awful puns about each.
On Kurt's suggestion, we'll start this marathon off with "Killdozer," the 1974 made-for-TV movie about a bulldozer that gets possessed by, what, an alien? And then goes on a rampage. Because, of course.
Next up, the 1990 made-for-TV movie "Wheels of Terror," which involves a kidnapper, or maybe an autonomous car, and a school bus-driving mother, and a chase ensues. Because, of course.
A creepy stranger driving a black car is also at the heart of the 1980 flick "The Hearse." This one apparently made it to theaters, which gave Roger Ebert the chance to review it and call it "this summer's garage sale of horror movies."
Finally, Stan Lee's acting debut came in the 1990 movie "The Ambulance." Horror film writers, please consider continuing this series. Next up, "The Taxi," then after that "The Milk Truck," "The Fire Engine," and "The Meter Maid Cart."
