Scott Pruett holds the record for victories in IMSA road-course competition, with an even 60 overall wins. And he’s still out there, running hard in a Daytona Prototype for Action Express Racing. That kind of record was more than sufficient to have Pruett named as this year’s recipient of the Phil Hill Award by the Road Racing Drivers Club, an honor that’s been bestowed annually since 1993.
Pruett, 55, is a California native who has raced in CART, the IROC series, SCCA Trans-Am, IMSA GTO and NASCAR. He notched his 60th IMSA victory last season, and has also been honored as co-rookie of the year at the 1989 Indianapolis 500 and enshrined in the World Karting Hall of Fame. RRDC president Bobby Rahal presented the award, a sculpture of Hill’s world championship-winning Formula 1 Ferrari of 1961. The award recognizes not just driving prowess, but also outstanding service to the sport. Hill, the first postwar American F1 champion and a master at automotive restoration, died in 2008.
“We think the Phil Hill Award represents something that’s very special in motorsport,” Rahal said. “And Scott Pruett lives up spectacularly to that example that Phil left us with.”
From the standpoint of victories and championships, Pruett holds seven wins at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, three Trans-Am titles, a class victory at Le Mans, two IMSA GTO championships and 10 pro karting crowns. He’s now working with Lexus and Paul Gentilozzi to develop the RC F GT3 in anticipation of a full assault on GT3 in 2017.
