Organizers of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance have postponed a class dedicated to the centennial of Lincoln that they had originally scheduled for next year, citing as a reason the number of cars that have already participated in Lincoln classes in recent years.
"We decided it would be better to hold off and wait a few years," Kandace Hawkinson, the director of marketing for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, said. "There are still other opportunities to celebrate Lincoln's centennial in the coming years."
According to Hawkinson, the concours has a 10-year rule – that is, any car displayed at the concours over the prior 10 years is not eligible for display – which means that the Lincolns that participated in the 2013 Coachbuilt Lincolns class and the 2015 Lincoln Continental 75th anniversary class will not be be able to return to the green of the country's foremost concours until 2023 and 2025, respectively.
While 2017 is one of a number of dates floated for Lincoln's centennial, it wasn't until September 1920 – following a reincorporation earlier that year – that Lincoln Motor Company began building cars, marketed as 1921 models.
Hawkinson said that Pebble Beach officials, when selecting concours classes based on marque anniversaries, "often base those decisions on the marques' founding dates. But it has varied and for us it's all about the cars and what we can bring to the show field." She cited the recent classes dedicated to BMW's and Maserati's centennials earlier this year and in 2014, respectively, the former selected based on the founding of Bayerische Flugzeuge Werke AG in 1916 and the latter selected based on "the date of its founding on paper."
Previously, a spokesperson for the concours said that the decision to feature Lincoln's centennial in 2017 was made by Lincoln itself, one of the concours's sponsors. Hawkinson said that the concours has often altered its class lineup after concours officials announced the upcoming featured classes.
No class has been named to replace the Lincoln centennial class for 2017, though Hawkinson said that concours officials intend to include "a couple Ferrari and a Jaguar custom coachwork" classes. The other announced featured classes – Isotta Fraschini cars, Castagna Coachwork cars, and American Dream Cars of the 1960s – remain on the 2017 lineup.
The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance will take place August 20. For more information, visit PebbleBeachConcours.net.
