If you're a connoisseur of Sixties diesel sedans, and you're looking for something more unusual than a Mercedes-Benz or even a Peugeot, this 1964 Isuzu Bellel Deluxe Diesel offered for sale on Hemmings.com might be just the ticket. Included for the asking price are two more Bellels, a 1964 that needs some mechanical work, and a 1965 parts car with a healthy engine.
Isuzu, which had been producing Wolseleys under license before World War II, became a volume producer after a 1953 agreement with Britain's Rootes Group to build Hillman cars. By 1957, the Hillman Minxes produced by Isuzu were entirely of Japanese manufacture.
The Bellel was the company's first original design, entering production in 1961. A somewhat conservative four-door sedan with styling influenced by Pininfarina and a set of angular taillamps all its own, the Bellel was offered with two gas engines of 1.5 and 2 liters, and a 2-liter diesel, a first in a Japanese production car. All came with column-shifted four-speed manual transmissions. The suspension was by coil springs and A-arms up front, and a solid axle with leaf springs in back. Brakes were four-wheel drum.
Isuzu built about 37,000 Bellels before production ended in 1967. According to the seller, just 300 of these cars were sold new in North America. In other words, you've probably never encountered one, and neither has anyone you know. Does that kind of exclusivity interest you?
